Moving Past the Past

You may have had a traumatic experience…

An experience where you did not feel safe…

Or where your rights were violated…

Or where you were not in control of what was happening…

Or where you lost something or someone important to you…

Sometimes the memories are too painful for the mind to bear.

Does the mere thought of them, even years later, bring a shutter to your body or tear to your eye?

Do you find yourself fixating on those memories… repeating them again and again in your head?

Do you feel like those memories hold you back from making progress or feeling normal in your life?

EMDR therapy can help you (and your brain) move forward.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) can help your brain see this disturbing material in a new and less distressing way, so you can put the experience behind you.

EMDR does not brainwash you into forgetting the trauma or being happy about it, but it renders it so that it doesn’t feel like it just happened.

For example, if you ever had surgery, you may remember waking up and being in a lot of pain. You can remember being in pain, but the difference now is that you don’t feel the pain. You remember it was there, but that pain is not there now.

EMDR is very similar! Once reprocessing and healing are complete, you may look back on the trauma and remember that it was painful… but the pain is no longer present.

The pain will be gone – as will all those negative thoughts about yourself and the world around you.

Here’s an overview of what sessions look like…

Our first couple of sessions are going to prepare you for reprocessing. In these sessions, you’ll choose specific memories that you find distressing and are tied to the event or trauma. We’ll discuss those memories, negative beliefs, and feelings associated with them. We’ll also talk about how you would like to feel in the future when you think about them.

I like to remind all of my clients that, with EMDR, you’re holding the controller. If you feel overwhelmed or want to stop, you’re going to hold up your hand or say stop, and we will. You choose the memories and speed of your reprocessing… it’s all in your hands.

EMDR works, says science and me.

I have experienced EMDR as a client. In fact, my experience with EMDR was a big part of what inspired me to become a therapist. I really believe in this therapy and its ability to provide a transformative experience.

In addition to my own experience, EMDR has been evaluated in numerous studies and has been repeatedly proven as an effective treatment for trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, chronic pain, and countless other mental health issues.

If you’re feeling bound to a bad experience(s) from your past, please reach out to discuss how EMDR can help you.
